Kemi Badenoch.Kemi Badenoch has been accused of making a “Liz Truss-style promise” after she unveiled plans for a massive unfunded tax cut.The Tory leader said she would axe the windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas companies, even though it is forecast to raise £10.8 billion over the next five years.The windfall tax was brought in by the Tories themselves in 2022 after oil prices spiked in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.But in a speech to the Scottish Conservatives’ conference in Edinburgh on Friday, Badenoch said: “There is no longer a windfall to tax. It has long gone. And the longer this regressive tax on one of our most successful industries remains, the more damaging it becomes.“Labour have extended and increased this tax.
