Vatican's solemn run-up to Easter opens with recovering Pope Francis improving but on the sidelines

Pope Francis is recovering from pneumonia. He delegates Holy Week services to cardinals. He is expected to make appearances. He made a surprise cameo at Palm Sunday Mass and visited St. Peter's Basilica and St. Mary Major basilica. He held an audience with medical staff and thanked them for their care. He composed meditations for the Via Crucis.
